County Council passes Ethical Advertising motion
With another successful night in the Council chamber we are pleased to report that a motion on Ethical Advertising has been passed by Full Council at Cambridgeshire County Council. Supporting the Council’s public health and environmental priorities, the motion proposed by Councillor Hilary Cox Condron (Arbury) and seconded by Cllr Alex Bulat (Abbey) was passed 26-24.
As a result of this motion, the Council will consider phasing out junk food advertising in County spaces and work on a Low Carbon Policy for advertising. Specifically, the Council is recommended to ask the Strategy and Resources Committee to:
consider phasing out all forms of junk food advertising in County Council spaces and aim instead to promote healthy products
in the context of the Council’s net zero strategy, publish an advertising strategy that includes the Council’s position on junk food and environmentally damaging products such as industrially farmed animal products.
investigate the possibility of a County wide Low Carbon Policy for advertising and sponsorship, and model any resulting financial impact.
The Council is also recommended to:
work collaboratively with District Councils to have a joined-up approach to this issue
ask the Chief Executive to write to the Secretaries of State for Health and Social Care, and Digital, Culture, Media and Sport asking them to consider a national junk food advertising ban in council owned spaces and public areas
work collaboratively with the Local Government Association to promote best practice.
