Cambridge University Press & Assessment
In December 2021 Cambridge Sustainable Food CIC presented a Silver Environment Award to Cambridge University Press & Assessment in recognition of sustainable food practices in its UK catering operations. It is the first organisation to receive this new award, part of Cambridge Sustainable Food CIC’s new modular award scheme for food businesses and caterers - an amazing achievement!
Cambridge University Press & Assessment, which is part of the University of Cambridge, supports individuals in their educational development through qualifications, assessments, original research and a myriad of academic publications, publishing more than 380 peer-reviewed academic journals and thousands of books for research and higher education each year.
It shares the University’s commitment to become a zero carbon organisation, alongside its own organisation-wide commitment to sustainability to benefit both people and the planet. Efforts to implement sustainable practices across every area of their operations also include in-house catering!
Achieving our Silver Environment Award reflects the incredible progress being made at Cambridge University Press & Assessment across all aspects of sustainable catering, particularly in tackling food and wider waste, offering a range of plant-based options, embedding energy efficiency into operations and managing environmental impacts at an organisational level.
Key points that have led to this award include:
Cambridge University Press & Assessment’s energy efficient facilities and onsite solar electricity generation
Its significant activities on waste reduction - making positive changes across multiple stages of the food waste hierarchy, including daily monitoring of waste and minimising waste from food preparation and service
Cutting packaging waste and switching from single-use plastic to reusable or compostable packaging for numerous products, as well as recycling unavoidable food and packaging waste, even down to crisp packets, was also applauded.
Cambridge University Press & Assessment is also making inspiring headway with plant-focused menus. Half of the dishes and a wide variety of tasty sweet, savoury and drink options are powered by plants!
Alongside these actions it is engaging its employees on the sustainability of their food choices to empower further positive actions, supported by the wider organisational commitment and action on sustainability.
We are thrilled to award Cambridge University Press & Assessment for its impressive environmental actions, through which it is playing a key role in building a sustainable food system across the city, benefiting the planet and the community.
