Abbey Good Food Neighbourhood

GROWING PROJECTS

  • Abbey is home to Cambridge’s first community farm, Cofarm Cambridge

  • There are two ways you can apply for an allotment in your neighbourhood. You can either apply through Cambridge City Council for a plot on one of the allotments they manage or apply for a plot which is ran by a local allotment society. Visit Cambridge Allotments Network to find your closest allotment.

  • Growing Spaces is ran by Transition Cambridge, aiming to reclaim unloved and underused public spaces around the city and transform them into edible landscapes. Find out more about how to get involved in your local growing space here.

  • Abbey is also home to Cambridge Cyrenians Allotment Project. Across 6 full sized allotment plots, the project provides specific horticulture training, supported work experience and a safe social environment for some of the most disadvantaged people in the city.

  • Margaret White Community Orchard is ran by Abbey People.

  • Situated on Newmarket Road, Darwin Nurseries is a horticulture project and farm shop where adults with learning disabilities and mental health challenges gain the skills, independence and confidence to take an active role in the community.

COMMUNITY FOOD PROJECTS

  • Abbey Food Hub is run by Abbey People and operates on a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday each weeks.

  • Abbey Cooks is run by Abbey People and is an online space to share recipes, meal ideas and all things cooking and baking in Abbey. During school holidays, cookery workshops are often ran for families too.

  • As part of their support for seniors, CUCT run the Forever United Café.

  • Abbey is home to the Cambridge Sustainable Food Redistribution Centre. The centre supplies Cambridge’s network of community food hubs with surplus and donated food supplies on a weekly basis.

  • Four Seasons: Good Food Neighbourhood at Akeman Street is an Evelyn Trust Funded project run in partnership with CSF, Shah Jahal Food Hub and the City Council Community development team that aims to create a friendly buzz around food throughout the seasons.
