Local food businesses celebrate sustainable food awards
Cambridge Sustainable Food CIC (CSF) is delighted to announce the latest winners of its new Sustainable Food Business Awards scheme and launch its new Sustainable Food Directory.
Recognising action being taken by local food businesses and organisations to tackle the climate and nature emergencies, and support social change, the awards scheme and food directory aim to celebrate and promote the huge variety of local food businesses who are helping to build a more sustainable city.
Cambridge received a Silver Award from Sustainable Food Places in 2021, recognising the breadth and depth of work happening on good food across our local authorities, businesses, organisations, and the wider community. As the city prepares to go for gold, CSF is helping food businesses and organisations to address their climate change and wider sustainability impacts and celebrate their achievements.
CSF is working with local food businesses through their new, modular awards scheme to recognise action on climate change and wider environmental issues, sustainable sourcing, and society. Maurizio Dining & Co., an Italian restaurant and wine bar on Mill Road, Cambridge University Press & Assessment and St John’s College are the latest organisations to receive an Environment Award as part of CSF’s Sustainable Food Business Awards scheme, supported by Cambridge City Council’s Sustainable City programme.
As one of the first to receive the new Environment Award, Sweet Gill D’Apollonio, co-founder of Maurizio Dining & Co. says:
‘We’re delighted to receive a Bronze Environment Award from Cambridge Sustainable Food. CSF reviewed our environmental practices and supported our team with training and actions. As a result, we’ve introduced an Environmental Policy; we’re measuring energy use; food and wider waste and we’re hoping to make our supply chain more sustainable as well. It’s on-going but we are heading in the right direction.
We’re part of the new Sustainable Food Business Alliance, which was set up by CSF for food businesses to share learning around sustainability and support change within the sector. We’re also joining CSF’s Sustainable Food Directory to help promote our business to locals and visitors. As a small independent eatery, we’re proud to have taken these first steps to becoming a more sustainable food business.’
The Sustainable Food Directory is the city’s go-to resource to find local and sustainable retailers, restaurants and cafes, caterers, growers and more. The new directory, developed with funding from the Veg Cities campaign at Sustainable Food Places, celebrates the best food producers in and around our city and highlights food businesses which are taking action to support people and the planet. Supporting local, sustainable food businesses is a significant way to play your part in transforming our food system - whether you’re grabbing lunch in a local café or a business looking for local and seasonal produce from sustainable wholesalers.
